Altered Zones was sad to find out this weekend that our Swiss-French friends over at Delicious Scopitone are laying their blog to rest after a year and a half of activity. We talked with founder Emmanuel Ducret about the decision over email…

AZ: Pourquoi as-tu décidé de stopper l’activité du site?

Emmanuel: Le Delicious Scopitone est un blog « collaboratif ». Comme dans toute famille ou vie de couple, il y a parfois des moments de bonheur mais aussi de tensions. Difficile de trouver un équilibre qui convient à tous, de communiquer suffisamment pour que chacun puissent (re)trouver sa place. C’est pourquoi il faut savoir s’arrêter quand nous n’arrivons plus à avancer ensemble, en harmonie. C’est ce qui est arrivé à notre merveilleuse aventure !

L’autre aspect qui me fait dire que c’est le moment de stopper ce blog, c’est le temps que je passe à lui consacrer. Tenir un blog, n’est pas une chose aisée et c’est souvent au détriment de notre vie personnelle… J’avais besoin de me retrouver, de retrouver les miens dans la « vraie vie ». Quitter le monde virtuel plus souvent pour y replonger avec plaisir et non plus par « obligation »… L’obligation de me trouver là, en première loge, pour la première… Car la course a bien commencée et elle est je crois sans fin, sans limite.

AZ: Quel aspect de ton travail sur le DS t’a donné le plus de plaisir?

Emmanuel: Il y a quelques mois, je me trouvais encore à la mine. Dans le charbon, je cherchais, je prospectais, passait des nuits à écouter pour trouver et dénicher ce qui me plaisait. Je dois le dire aujourd’hui, je n’ai plus vraiment ce « loisir », ce plaisir et cela me manque d’alimenter un blog parce que des centaines de visiteurs attendent une alimentation. C’est de ma faute d’avoir vu si « grand ». Votre blog subitement semble ne plus vous appartenir. C’est une sensation particulière d’autant plus qu’un blog à vocation de partager ce que l’on aime. Je ne m’étendrais pas sur le sujet… Je suis en pleine réflexion !

Un plaisir secondaire découvert, c’est d’avoir fait travailler mes oreilles. Je m’explique, tel un muscle et à force d’écoute, mes oreilles se sont formatées à découvrir de nouveaux horizons. Des sons, des rythmes, des univers qui me semblaient trop étrangers pour que je puisse dire : « Ah oui tient c’est intéressant cela ».

Sans oublier bien sûr, les rencontres riches d’émotions avec les artistes, les amis blogueurs, les visiteurs… De vrais liens d’amitiés et d’échange sont nés. Et cela je n’aurai jamais pu le vivre autrement !

AZ: Est-ce que les contributeurs du DS continueront en tant que bloggeurs ailleurs? Quels sont vos plans?

Emmanuel: Je ne connais pas les plans des autres contributeurs du DS, c’est encore trop tôt, trop subite pour pouvoir l’annoncer et surtout me prononcer à leur place. Je crois qu’il faut que l’on fasse chacun et à sa manière le deuil de celui-ci. Cela n’a pas été une décision simple à prendre malgré la rapidité de l’annonce.

Pour ma part, je ne vais rien précipiter. J’ai bien envie de reconstruire quelque chose qui me correspond aujourd’hui plus personnellement. Mais j’ai envie de laisser vivre cette absence et surtout de laisser mourir le blog que j’ai conçu. Pour ne pas tout mélanger, pour ne pas reconstruire sur les cendres que je laisse.

AZ: What made you decide to retire Delicious Scopitone?

Emmanuel: Delicious Scopitone is a “collaborative” blog. Like in any family or romantic relationship, there are both moments of happiness and moments of tension. It’s hard to find a balance that works well for everyone, to communicate well so that everyone feels like they have their place. When you’re no longer able to move forward together in harmony, you have to know when to stop. So that’s what happened to our wonderful adventure!

The other thing that made me realize that it was time to lay DS to rest was the amount of time I was devoting to it. Running a blog is no easy task, and it’s often to the detriment of our personal lives. I really needed to find myself again, to reconnect with my loved ones, in the “real world”. To leave the virtual world so I could return to it with pleasure, and not out of “obligation”– the obligation to be there, to be first, to get the premiere. Because it really is a race — a race without end, without limits.

AZ: What was your favorite thing about being a blogger?

Emmanuel: A few months ago, I was still deep inside the MP3 mine — searching, prospecting, staying up all night listening to music in the hope of uncovering something I liked. I have to say that I don’t really have this “leisure” any more, this pleasure, and I don’t enjoy publishing just because hundreds of visitors are waiting for my next post. I guess it’s my fault for having thought so “big”. It doesn’t feel like your blog belongs to you anymore. It’s a strange feeling– all the more so because music blogging, by definition, is sharing what you love with other people. I just felt conflicted by the whole situation.

The second aspect of blogging I really enjoyed was really putting my ears to work, like a muscle. Just by listening all the time, my ears transformed, better equipped to discover new horizons. To appreciate sounds, rhythms, and musical universes that were foreign to me, and to recognize that I was hearing something really interesting.

Without forgetting, of course, all the wonderful artists, fellow bloggers, and visitors I met along the way — and all the friendships and creative exchanges that resulted.  I can’t imagine any of that ever happening if I hadn’t done the blog.

AZ: Will the Delicious Scopitone contributors continue blogging elsewhere? What are your plans?

Emmanuel: I don’t know what the other contributors’ plans are; it’s still too early to say, and I definitely don’t think that I can speak on their behalf. I think that each of us must take the time to grieve in his or her own fashion. It was not an easy decision to make, despite the suddenness of the announcement.

On my end, I don’t want to rush into anything. I would like to eventually create a new project better suited to me personally. But I want this absence to endure, and will not be resurrecting the site itself in any way. I just don’t want to mix things up, don’t want to reconstruct from the ashes of what I left behind.

Le weekend est terminé. Terminé également l’été. A cette époque de l’année, j’ai pourtant l’habitude de rentrer en quasi-hibernation. Proche du coma. Mais cette fois-ci, je vais reculer la date décisive, car dès le 9 novembre, il va y avoir du ‘Sports’ avec la sortie de l’album de Weekend chez Slumberland Records.

The week-end is over. Summer as well. This time of the year is usually a time to enter partial hibernation. Coma close. I’ll postpone it this time, cause from the 9th of November, will be the  time to practice as ‘Sports’ will be released from Weekend on Slumberland Records.

Il y a quelques temps déjà, on écoutait les échardes acoustiques de Young Prayer, ce fantastique album de la révérence. Skin to Soil s’ouvre avec un duo de psaumes égalant les prières de Panda Bear. Beach Party et Whisper Always enflamment direct l’intime. Le duo de voix qui compose Wet Wings, Darian et Lucy, magnifie toutes les compositions. Circulant entre les instruments comme de lascives rivières, leur chant tend à la pureté comme sur le formidable « On a Journey ». « Running Like a Man » tournoie en des halos mystérieux et mélancoliques. « Sleep Tight » ressemble à une adorable comptine qui s’embarque, peu à peu, vers une angoissante incantation. Incantation portée par des cordes inquiètes et nébuleuses.

Etrange poème sur l’enfance, les secrets et la solitude. Incroyable choeur racontant cette nature immense, celle de la Nouvelle Zélande, qui se métamorphose soudainement en colombe ou en louve. Skin to Soil dépose directement contre notre peau le charme d’une caresse. Une caresse inoubliable.

A few times ago, we were listening to the acoustic splinters of Young Prayer, a spectacular record of reverently. Skin To Soil is opening on a duo of psalms, equal to Panda Bear’s prayers. Beach Party and Whisper Always are instantly burning the inside. The voice duo of Wet Wings, Darian and Lucy, are glorifying every compositions. Going from an instrument to the other, like sensual rivers, their voices are close to purity, just like on the great « On A Journey ». « Running Like A Man » is spinning around in mysterious and melancholic halos. « Sleep Tight » is like and adorable lullaby going, little by little, towards a harrowing incantation. The kind of incantation carried by worried and cloudy strings.

Weird poem of my childhood, secrets and loneliness. An unbelievable choir is telling me about that immense nature, from New Zealand, morphing suddenly into a dove or a she-wolf. Skin To Soil is covering us with charmful strokes. Unforgettable strokes.

Discovering and absorbing music is somewhat of a second nature to me. Ever since I was a little kid I’ve had an obsessive fascination with any music that has triggered emotional responses within me.

Growing up, I was always attracted to music that I thought to be new, different or transgressive towards the music that was forcibly peddled to my generation and I via pop radio or MTV (except maybe Blink-182, they ruled). My musically formative years, about ages 11 to 14, were spent living on a farm in rural Southern Ontario where I found myself alone more often than not. My time was occupied by making violent stick animations, primitive websites and graphics, experimenting with photography, religiously playing guitar and listening to my Moms record collection or trying to find new music online.

The internet provided me with not only a distraction from my loneliness, but also an massive window to sprawling cultural catalogs both old and new that I would have never come across on my own (having been a young gay social outsider with a taste for the obscure living within a culturally repressive wasteland). Hours were spent scouring pre-Wikipedia websites and reading biographies about bands that slowly became necessary heroes to me. Even if it meant downloading a handful of songs off of Kazaa or LimeWire by bands like The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth or Nirvana and not even knowing which album they were released on, it felt like a whole new power presence had been opened up to me that alleviated me of my sexual confusion and adolescent depression. The complex reaction of emotions that I derived from music at that age was what inspired me to start making my own music.

It’s now the fall of my 21st year, I don’t go to school anymore and I’m between day jobs, which leaves me with endless time to immerse myself in music. I am blessed to be able to run my own small record label which helps to distribute a good deal of the new music that I love, and my own output and standing with Foxes in Fiction is exactly where I want it to be. With Orchid Tapes and several new releases of my own in the works, I’ve never felt more productive.

Though a lot of the time I have trouble articulating and distilling what some music specifically means to me (without using superficial and tired descriptors), I’m willing to give it a try. Hopefully this playlist of songs (new and old) will be able to give a little bit of insight into my character and into the inspiration that drives Foxes in Fiction. Thanks for reading.

Découvrir et m’imprégner de la musique est une sorte de seconde nature chez moi. Depuis mon enfance, j’ai développé une fascination obsédante pour toute forme de musique faisant naître des émotions en moi.

En grandissant, j’étais sans cesse attiré par une musique qui me semblait nouvelle, différente ou qui transgresse par rapport à la musique qu’on nous matraquait via les radios pop ou MTV (à part peut-être Blink 182, ils assuraient). Durant mes années de formation musicale, autour de 11-14 ans, je vivais dans une ferme au milieu de la campagne du sud de l’Ontario où je me retrouvais seul la plupart du temps. J’occupais mon temps à créer des animations violentes, des sites web et du graphisme primaires, m’expérimentais à travers la photographie, pratiquais la guitare religieusement et écoutais la discothèque de mes mères, ou essayais de trouver de nouvelles musiques en ligne.

Internet ne m’apportait pas seulement un divertissement à ma solitude, mais surtout une énorme fenêtre sur une étendue de références culturelles autant anciennes que récentes sur lesquelles je ne me serais jamais penchées de mon propre chef (étant un jeune gay asocial avec un goût pour un mode de vie obscur dans une région gâchée par la répression culturelle). J’ai passé des heures à défricher les sites prédécesseurs de Wikipedia, à lire les bio des groupes qui devenaient progressivement mes héros. Même si cela signifiait télécharger des chansons par poignées à partir de Kazaa ou LimeWire de groupes comme The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth ou Nirvana, sans même savoir de quels albums elles venaient, cela m’apportait une nouvelle présence forte qui minimisait ma sexualité tourmentée et ma crise d’adolescence. La réaction émotionnelle complexe qui découle de la musique à cet âge est ce qui m’a inspiré quand j’ai commencé à composer ma propre musique.

J’en suis maintenant à la fin de ma 21ème année, je ne vais plus à l’école et passe mon temps entre deux emplois en journée, ce qui me laisse un temps infini pour m’immerger dans la musique. Je suis reconnaissant de pouvoir diriger mon propre petit label, ce qui contribue à distribuer pas mal de musiques actuelles que j’aime, quant à mes propres créations avec Foxes In Fiction, elles correspondent exactement à ce que je voulais faire. Avec Orchid Tapes et plusieurs de mes nouveaux projets, je ne me suis jamais senti aussi productif.

Cependant, la plupart du temps, j’éprouve des difficultés à assembler et filtrer les musiques qui me touchent (sans utiliser des descriptifs superficiels et pompeux), j’essaie de faire des tentatives. J’espère que cette playlist de chansons (anciennes et récentes) réussira à faire entrevoir un peu de ma personnalité ainsi que ce qui inspire le travail de Foxes In Fiction. Trans-Bedroom Sound – Descending Dusk

The music that Ben Van Patten makes under the guise of Trans-Bedroom Sound is the music I can only dream of having made when I was his age (sixteen). He is the creator of some of the most exquisite and refined ambient music I’ve ever come across and I often wish that songs like this one would go on forever and ever. Vocals aren’t necessary in his songs like this because it feels like you’re listening to the tonal equivalent of a feeling. I’m proud to be able to call Ben a friend of mine and also to say that his next four song EP, also titled Descending Dusk will be earning itself a release on Orchid Tapes in the next two days.

La musique que produit Ben Van Patten, sous les traits de Trans-Bedroom Sound, est une musique que je n’aurais pu créer que dans mes rêves à son âge (16 ans). Il est l’auteur de l’une des musique d’ambiance la plus exquise et raffinée que j’ai pu entendre. Je souhaite souvent que ces chansons-là ne s’arrêtent jamais. Il n’y a pas nécessairement de voix dans ses chansons, parce qu’il semble qu’on entend l’équivalent tonal d’un sentiment. Je suis fier de pouvoir compter Ben parmi mes amis et aussi fier de pouvoir annoncer que son prochain EP de 4 titres, qui s’appelle également Descending Dusk, sortira sur Orchid Tapes dans les deux prochains jours.

Benoit Pioulard – Sault

Thomas Meluch’s music as Benoit Pioulard came to me at a turning point in my life where I was beginning to find my own recognition as a musician and was able to abandon a lot of the anxieties that once plagued my mind (not without the arrival of new and different ones). Insecurities aside, every time I play his records I feel instantly at ease and filled with a stillness and reverence that is hard to come across in modern music. The tape-effected quality of his music is something that has gotten me far more interested in the aesthetic possibilities of recording music, and his masterful guitar playing and incredible vocal talents both inspire and leave me awestruck.

La musique de Thomas Meluch, sous le pseudonyme de Benoit Pioulard, m’est parvenu à un tournant de ma vie quand j’ai commencé à prendre de l’assurance en tant que musicien et pouvais laisser derrière moi beaucoup d’angoisses qui contaminaient mon esprit auparavant (non sans que d’autres nouvelles et diverses n’arrivent). Les complexes d’infériorités mis de côté, je me sentais tout de suite à l’aise tout en étant complètement paralysé et admiratif à l’écoute de ses albums, ce qui est rare à éprouver avec la musique aujourd’hui. L’effet du format cassette sur sa musique est quelque chose qui m’a encore donné plus envie de m’intéresser aux possibilités esthétiques de la production musicale. Sa maîtrise de la guitare et ses talents incroyables de chanteur m’ont à la fois inspiré et laissé sans voix.

Coma Cinema – She’s a Dentist

Mat Cothran, the man behind Coma Cinema is a superb and rare human being with an acute understanding of how perceptions can shift within people when they’re emotionally fucked up or going through the worst times of their lives. A friend sent his album Baby Prayers to me months ago when I was still acclimatizing to the internet music thing and around the same time Mat and I began talking. I quickly began to discover what a genuinely dedicated musicians he was and how this rings through his work. His incredible songwriting, kind and inspiring character, and sober honesty has made Baby Prayers one of my favourite albums of all time.

Mat Cothran, l’homme derrière Coma Cinema est un être humain à la fois superbe et rare, avec une compréhension affinée de comment les perceptions des choses peuvent changer chez les gens alors qu’ils sont émotionnellement perturbés ou lorsqu’ils traversent les pires moments de leur vie. Un ami m’a envoyé son album, Baby Prayers, il y a des mois alors que je m’acclimatais avec la musique sur internet et, à peu près au même moment, Mat et moi avons commencé à nous parler. J’ai très vite découvert quel musicien sincère et dévoué il était et comment cela se répercute dans son travail. Des textes incroyables, une identité touchante et inspirée, et la pure honnêteté ont fait de Baby Prayers un de mes albums préférés de tous les temps.

Atlas Sound – Saturday Night We Went/ Swimming And There Was a Light In The Water

In a way, citing Atlas Sound’s music feels paradoxical. On one hand, I feel like it will help people to better understand some of the similarities between our music beyond a superficial level (as I have explained before). On the other hand, I feel like it may draw out the seemingly endless comparisons. That being said, I can’t ignore the influence his music has had on my life and my own work, and I also really don’t care.

I feel like I am particularly prone to merging experience and association with ambient music and this isn’t any more true than with this song (or the entire Weekend EP). When I went through a post-traumatic nervous breakdown in the spring of 2009, this was one of the songs that helped me to get through it. I would spend evenings biking around all night by myself with it on repeat. The whole evocative package (artwork photograph, title, music itself) made me feel all at once like I was living squarely within my present life; a moment of intense emotion magnified by adolescence, and at the same time placing me within a distant memory of life that I’d never experienced. Transported to the sunshine-filled days of my childhood that are now just hazed-out halcyon snapshots, obscured and distorted by nostalgic longing.

Dans un sens, citer la musique d’Atlas Sound paraît paradoxal. D’un côté, je pense que cela aidera les gens à mieux comprendre certaines de nos similitudes, au delà des apparences (comme je l’ai déjà expliqué). D’un autre côté, j’ai l’impression que cela ne fait que renforcer ces mêmes comparaisons incessantes. Ceci étant dit, je ne peux nier l’influence que sa musique a eu dans ma vie et dans mon propre travail, et je m’en fiche aussi pas mal de tout ça.

Je pense avoir particulièrement tendance à faire référence à des expériences et à faire des associations avec la musique ambiante. Cela est d’autant plus vrai avec cette chanson (ou avec tout l’EP Weekend). Alors que je sortais d’une dépression traumatisante au cours du printemps 2009, ce fut l’une des chansons qui m’aida à m’en sortir. Je passais alors des soirées entières à errer en vélo avec cette chanson en boucle. Toute l’évocation de l’objet (la photographie de la pochette, le titre, la musique même) me rendait à la fois conscient de ma vie présente – une période d’intense émotion magnifiée par l’adolescence – tout en me transposant dans un souvenir lointain et inconnu. Transporté dans les jours ensoleillés de mon enfance, aujourd’hui des photos d’alcyon embrumées, assombries et déformées par la nostalgie.

Stereolab – Les Yper-Sound (live on Later! with Jools Holland)

Every few years I come across a band that helps to almost completely rewrite the faculties that I use to listen to and write music. I discovered Stereolab’s music through a video of them performing Les Yper-Sound on Later! with Jools Holland, and since, ideas and attitudes towards what a pop song can be have been drastically altered. The rich instrumental parts and vocal play between Mary Hansen and Laetitia Sadier are something that I find myself constantly making reference to. The nice thing about discovering bands this late in their careers (or in fact disbanded, in Stereolab’s case) is that there is such a large history of music, releases, rarities and solo projects to delve into. Since I tend to digest music relatively slowly, my exploration of their music is a still-ongoing and rewarding process.

J’ai découvert la musique de Stereolab à travers une vidéo d’un live de ‘Les Yper-Sound’ à Later! With Jools Holland. les idées et le comportement que j’avais de et envers une chanson pop furent radicalement modifiés. La richesse du jeu entre les moments instrumentaux et la voix, entre Mary Hansen et Laetitia Sadier, sont des références pour moi. L’avantage de découvrir un groupe si tardivement dans sa carrière (ou plutôt déjà séparé, dans le cas de Stereolab) est qu’il y a déjà un lourd passé musical, d’albums, de raretés et projets solos dans lesquels s’immerger. Comme je mets du temps à digérer la musique, mon exploration de leur œuvre est un processus en cours et toujours enrichissant, actuellement.
