Altered Zones was sad to find out this weekend that our Swiss-French friends over at Delicious Scopitone are laying their blog to rest after a year and a half of activity. We talked with founder Emmanuel Ducret about the decision over email…

-

Altered Zones was sad to find out this weekend that our Swiss-French friends over at Delicious Scopitone are laying their blog to rest after a year and a half of activity. We talked with founder Emmanuel Ducret about the decision over email. Original French interview after the jump.

AZ: What made you decide to retire Delicious Scopitone?

Emmanuel: Delicious Scopitone is a “collaborative” blog. Like in any family or romantic relationship, there are both moments of happiness and moments of tension. It’s hard to find a balance that works well for everyone, to communicate well so that everyone feels like they have their place. When you’re no longer able to move forward together in harmony, you have to know when to stop. So that’s what happened to our wonderful adventure!

The other thing that made me realize that it was time to lay DS to rest was the amount of time I was devoting to it. Running a blog is no easy task, and it’s often to the detriment of our personal lives. I really needed to find myself again, to reconnect with my loved ones, in the “real world”. To leave the virtual world so I could return to it with pleasure, and not out of “obligation”– the obligation to be there, to be first, to get the premiere. Because it really is a race — a race without end, without limits.

AZ: What was your favorite thing about being a blogger?

Emmanuel: A few months ago, I was still deep inside the MP3 mine — searching, prospecting, staying up all night listening to music in the hope of uncovering something I liked. I have to say that I don’t really have this “leisure” any more, this pleasure, and I don’t enjoy publishing just because hundreds of visitors are waiting for my next post. I guess it’s my fault for having thought so “big”. It doesn’t feel like your blog belongs to you anymore. It’s a strange feeling– all the more so because music blogging, by definition, is sharing what you love with other people. I just felt conflicted by the whole situation.

The second aspect of blogging I really enjoyed was really putting my ears to work, like a muscle. Just by listening all the time, my ears transformed, better equipped to discover new horizons. To appreciate sounds, rhythms, and musical universes that were foreign to me, and to recognize that I was hearing something really interesting.

Without forgetting, of course, all the wonderful artists, fellow bloggers, and visitors I met along the way — and all the friendships and creative exchanges that resulted. I can’t imagine any of that ever happening if I hadn’t done the blog.

AZ: Will the Delicious Scopitone contributors continue blogging elsewhere? What are your plans?

Emmanuel: I don’t know what the other contributors’ plans are; it’s still too early to say, and I definitely don’t think that I can speak on their behalf. I think that each of us must take the time to grieve in his or her own fashion. It was not an easy decision to make, despite the suddenness of the announcement.

On my end, I don’t want to rush into anything. I would like to eventually create a new project better suited to me personally. But I want this absence to endure, and will not be resurrecting the site itself in any way. I just don’t want to mix things up, don’t want to reconstruct from the ashes of what I left behind.

*********************************************

Thanks to you all, a special thanks to the artists, without you it could’nt have been possible !! With so much intensity and love…

Emmanuel

I met Family Trees at Pianos in New York, August 18th. Amanda told me more about her band…

Il y a quelques temps déjà, celle que Ryan préférait était «I Am the Walrus». Maintenant, je pense que c’est plutôt « You’re Going to Lose That Girl ». »

« Ryan started writing and recording songs on his own and eventually Joe and me joined so he could play those songs live. Then Joe and Ryan started writing more together and now we’re a real band. The name is something Ryan came up with a long time ago, he has been using Family Trees as his solo project for more than five years. I think he really loves the word family, it’s a really pretty word. Jessi of Father Daughter Records approached Ryan before we even played our first show. She had found his solo recordings and wanted us to be the first release on the label. She is so supportive and dedicated to us. We also love that the label is really her and her father! As far as taste in music, I will answer for Ryan since he is the brains behind our sound. His father is a true listener and Ryan really grew up appreciating the classics: the Beatles, the Kinks, the Beach Boys, the Zombies. His dad’s favorite Beatle is probably Paul, although his least favorite Beatles song is « Hello, Goodbye ». In eighth grade Ryan’s favorite Beatles song was « I Am the Walrus ». Now, I think it’s « You’re Going to Lose That Girl ». He was also always encouraged to play music, which is really special. We listen to a lot of music at our house. Right now it’s a lot of girl groups. The Shangri-Las are probably our favorite. We also love Jonathan Richman and Ryan has recently discovered The Fresh & Onlys. Our friends from the bands Reading Rainbow and Eternal Summers also make really inspiring music, and they’re both releasing stuff soon so we’re psyched!
Heathcliff.

Heathcliff. This was how I felt like while the rain, like innumerable hands, was pouring and pressing in mauve-hued ripples against my windows. I was feeling passionate, grim and tormented like Brontë’s hero. A perfect mood to approach SLEEP ∞ OVER’s mystical threnodies.

Not only sprinkling a romance of ineffability and sensuality, SLEEP ∞ OVER also means to explore darkness and death. And if death is just one side of the river of life, then that music crosses its bank with stunning grace.

A Charon clad in black though moving with the long legs of a woman, a boatwoman – a bewitching boatwoman – who takes you away amid the flowery scent of her boat, as in OUTER LIMITS. A song like the experience of all the senses – an experience of fear and irrationality. Fateful. A night illuminated with a thousand melodious lights.

Indeed, SLEEP ∞ OVER is the magnificent bond between Eros and Thanatos. The journey of a lifetime and an essential music to be eventually revealed to the world. So let these mysterious girls carry you away with them.

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

Making music often means to create worlds that often get out of control. Your melodies make me think of haunted scenes, mystery and some melancholy. It also sounds very sensual. How would you describe your music ?

We make what comes naturally to us, so it’s difficult to nail the vibe on it. We’re creating songs out of our experience, encapsulated within a particular moment. If there is a song that you get a certain feeling from, it’s probably because we were feeling that way when it was written.

Is the place where you live, with its landscapes, its perfumes and its colors, a source of inspiration to you ?

Austin is a relaxed, smallish city. Most of the year is unbearably hot but everyone finds some way to chill out and deal with it. When we wrote the songs for our first tape, we were in a freezing tin storage unit in the middle of our short lived winter. I think that most Texans get a little buzz off of any seasonal change.

There’s childhood in your songs, with its peculiar innocence and fears. Would you say your music particularly feeds on your experience of life?

We actually hang out with kids all the time, so it’s not surprising that it would reflect some way in our music.

You are a trio. As such, how do you usually work on each of your composition?

Most of the time, we arrange our songs from pieces of taped jams. We try to get things recorded as they arise and then pick out what we like and go from there.

You’ve worked with Pure Ecstasy. Is meeting other musicians, with their own specific worlds, important to you and for your art ?

Completely. Getting to go out on tour, meeting new people and changing things up is what pumps the creative juice.

As a conclusion, which artists are essential and inspiring to you ? When I listen to your songs, I think of David Lynch, Daniel Clowes or Beach House.

We listened to Ray Lynch’s “Deep Breakfast” a lot on this last tour, courtesy of Austin Youngblood’s sweet tape collection.

*************************************

Bob Dylan – Girl From The North Country

My favorite Dylan tune. It’s a beautifully heartbreaking song. The idea of wanting to look after someone that you may never see again, to make sure they are alright, even someone who may never want to talk to you again. That kind of blind, unconditional love is beautiful. Love in the face of hate. Production wise, it just sounds so nice and creamy, I really love Dylan’s voice during this period.

[MP3] Bob Dylan – Girl From The North Country

Bon Iver – Re: Stacks

I like this one for several of the same reasons I like the Dylan song, I think the two are quite similar actually. This whole Bon Iver album is wonderful of course, but for this last song to be stripped down to nothing else but one guitar and one voice is a perfect way to end it. Justin is from Wisconsin, which is where I grew up and hope to return some day, so I’ve always had a close connection to this music. Also, as a musician myself, he made it « cool » to be from Wisconsin, so I always appreciate that.

[MP3] Bon Iver – Re: Stacks

Dirty Projectors - The Glad Fact

This is from an early Dirty Projectors album, and this song is all about attitude. I love the sound of this so much. For the album I’m finishing up right now, I basically started off by wanting to make it sound exactly like this song. Such warm distortion, clean guitar and vocals, with that little bit of synth. Dirty Projectors is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I could sum up my love for them with this one song. Their newer stuff is much cleaner and more complex, but it all comes back to the raw emotion and nakedness that is so present in this song.

tUnE-YaRdS – Sunlight

Along with the previous track, this song/album by tUnE-YaRdS was one of my « models » for the production of my current album. I actually got into tUnE-YaRdS after I saw her open for Dirty Projectors at a show in Chicago. I like this for many of the same reasons as the Dirty Projectors song – raw emotion, with a bit of dirty beauty here and there. The song is very sparse and bare and I think that helps the message along very nicely.

[MP3] tUnE YaRdS – Sunlight

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy

This will always be one of my favorite songs off of one of my favorite albums ever. I put this on the list because it echoes and sums up many of the themes brought forth by the other four songs. Raw emotion, basic ingredients (guitar and voice), a yearning for a different place or a different person. This is not only a great song, but a great performance — doing a cover of this song could never give it what Jeff gave it with this recording. So intense and heartfelt.

Taio Cruz – Dynamite

I go back and forth through phases with mainstream pop in my country. Sometimes it’s all I listen to. I’m not trying to be contentious, but lately I’m seeing much more invention and creativity in the chart toppers than I have in the musical underground, and this song is currently on constant repeat for me. The melodies slide into each other so smoothly and that piano is fucking unstoppable.

[MP3] Taio Cruz – Dynamite

Krayzie Bone – Murda Mo

This is one of my favorite songs ever and has been since the first time it entered my ear canal. I am still amazed every time but the visceral, unyielding beauty in lyrics like « Don’t be fucking with a thug who slug/ ripping them guts and dripping that blood », and the incredible multi-layered melodies. On top of that, this is far and away the best use of « Moments in Love » by Art of Noise.

[MP3] Krayzie Bone – Murda Mo

Morphine – Cure For Pain

Sadly it seems like Morphine has been forgotten by a lot of people since the death of their singer/bassist. To me this is the best song to represent their apathetic groove. I also find myself incredibly disappointed by the lack of saxophone in modern pop. It gets a bad rap for being lame but I think this song proves how cool it can be in the right hands.

[MP3] Morphine – Cure For Pain

Brian Jonestown Massacre – (David Bowie I Love You) Since I Was Six

Definitely the most influential song on my own music that I can think of. I’d do anything to be the one to have written this song, it’s wholly perfect and mesmerizing in its spiritual level of beauty. No other song makes me feel this way.

[MP3] Brian Jonestown Massacre – (David Bowie I Love You) Since I Was Six

The Stranglers – Golden Brown

To me this song most perfectly describes the tumultuous relationship of self found within addiction. I have a thing for odd time signatures and this is definitely a lilting, drunken sort of waltz. The imagery as well in the lyrics is eerie and pretty. None of their other songs have ever clicked with me but most bands never even write one good song at all so they’re still ahead of the curve.

Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel – Tumbling Down

Cockney Rebel has a way with sweeping epics, and this is perhaps the group at their most emotive and passionate. All at once Victorian and pompous, with a hint of a punk rock sneer, and you can’t beat that ending mantra « Oh dear/ Look what they’ve done to the blues ».

What they’ve done to the blue».

When the Campfires’ adventure started and how?

It’s hard to say when Campfires came together out of the jumble of other bands and projects that were going on. The first songs were finished in the early summer of 2009 but many of the ideas had been around a long time. I first put them online about a year ago. As a live band with other people, it started in February or March, right before SXSW. This all kind of grows out of home recording as more of a pastime, which started when I was 15 or so in my parents’ basement.

What gave you a taste for music?

I think that laying around in my older sister’s room and listening to early 90s rock music when I was a kid was when it first really got me. It captured my imagination and seemed infinitely cool.

During your childhood, what kind of music did you listen to?

I had « Sgt. Pepper’s » and « Beatles 1967-70 » on tape from my parents and I listened to them non-stop. I got in trouble for breaking pens open on our stereo while drumming along to it. We would listen to « Graceland » a lot too. I started buying music when I was 10 or 11. I remember getting the Mallrats soundtrack was a big deal because it had a parental advisory sticker on it. And the Angus soundtrack too. That slayed.
J’avais « Sgt.

Can you tell me more about your influences? Music, books, movies, … food! I mean anything. Musique, livres, films, … nourriture! Tout.

Across all those I’m a big fan of people who can gesture at something big by saying something small, or get a point across without saying every word of it. I think Terrence Mallick and Stanley Kubrick are good at that in film and in writing I like short fiction, where you get a whole slice of a universe in just a few pages. Spending time in Michigan is a big influence on me, exploring the old factories with friends and going into the woods. This is a hard question, though! Music-wise, there’s just too much. I like listening to haunted, scratchy Lomax-style recordings a lot, but also to British Invasion stuff and whatever else. Recently Julian Lynch, White Fence, and Two Sides of Tim Cohen have been getting heavy play.

When you are composing your songs, have you images in your head that inspire you for your music? What is the process?

Usually I’ll just sit around playing guitar until I hit on something that feels right, and then go from there. I’ll try to remember little phrases or images and then match them up with the feel of a fragment of music and then build them up until it’s a song. I think the most important part is non-verbal though, using music to communicate something that I couldn’t communicate as well or at all in words. People put so much emphasis on explaining things, especially art, but I think the more interesting stuff is what you know without ever being told. So, I guess the goal is to try to get into that subconscious territory a little, or for people to know the songs with their own images, too, and not just mine.

« Tapes never went away », you have great releases on Mexican Summer and Leftist Nautical Antiques but also a very cool split on Bathetic Records. What do you think about labels and cassettes, and their future?

I think that everything is changing but that people will be able to find new ways to do things and some will survive. Tapes are cheap and durable and I think that they encourage the listener to sort of zone out and listen to a whole side rather than just devouring their favorite song over and over. Sometimes people make it seem like tapes are all just a nostalgia trip but I think that the real story is CDs are a shitty format and vinyl is expensive to produce for a small label, making tapes an appealing option. I think the generation that has basically unlimited access to free music has also discovered a weird hollow feeling when you just have the tunes without any tangible object, and there is something deep that gets lost when you download like 20 albums a day. Hopefully people see the value in that deeper experience because labels can be pretty clever but they still need people buying music to survive. Same with record stores and bands I guess. Music will be around.

Pigeons is the musical project of lovely and tenderhearted duo Wednesday Knudsen / Clark Griffin. The band just released their second album Faustine on Olde English Spelling Bee and The Curatorial Club 006, a great tape entirely live B-side.

When we got to know the band were doing a show in Paris on July 8th, 2010 with Rick Tomlinson (aka Voice of the Seven Woods) and the screening of « No Deposit No Return Blues », we immediately agreed to go and see them, having a lot of questions in mind. The show was great, the audience was made of us and a few friends of ours. A couple of beers, twenty candles on the ground, and of course: Pigeons. Being absolutely shy, François le Kennel District brought me to Wednesday for an interview.

Why did you call your band Pigeons? Pourquoi avez-vous appelé votre groupe Pigeons?

Well, it’s great because it’s the same in French and in English. So… Pigeons, Pigeons! It was just kind of what came to mind from we were, try to think of what’s color song. We have been in a band previously called Sea Donkeys and we felt very connected to them. So, we taught that a donkey is a very interesting animal and a pigeon maybe is. That’s why Pigeons!

You recently moved in Paris, why did you decide to stay here? Vous avez déménagé récemment à Paris. Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de rester ici ?

We had a chance to do it. Also for taking a break, NY is very stressful.

You were born in The Bronx or…?

No, I was born in New Jersey!

How is the living in the Bronx, is it electric?

It’s in the city, it’s just north of Manhattan. We found an apartment. So, we can play music there. That’s very wonderful and we have great neighbors. It’s pretty nice looking, I’m very happy!

And, do you think there is a gentrification in this place?

The Bronx, well I think is a regular place, there is no attraction, no hips people coming, crossing and turning around every corners. It’s very different from Brooklyn.

Why are you singing in French? Pourquoi chantes-tu en français?

French because is so lovely… beautiful and Françoise Hardy. Also, it’s more difficult to understand and I like that… Maybe they don’t know what I’m saying. It’s more obscure, something to the dreaminess of the songs.

And have you discovered French bands that you like?

Well, we have our record collection at home. It’s quite like classic French records from the 60’s and Françoise Hardy. It’s general what we listen to, so…!

Also, are you connected to all this music scene growing up in Brooklyn and New Jersey with your label OESB which is very related to Julian Lynch, Real Estate, Rangers etc.?

Oh yeah, that’s something that happened very recently. We met all of them a short time ago and introduce to their music. And like I was saying before about the French music, we have our classic records from the 60’s and 70’s that we are listening all the time, with a lot of free jazz. We originally started out with a jazz duo, I played saxophone and Clark the drums. And, it’s how it begins. Blue sky, and all that stuff!

So, when did you start your band? Donc, quand avez-vous formé le groupe ?

Five years ago with a very free evolution. It has not been intentional, it’s just by accident that we began to play songs and we enjoyed it and that’s just what happened. We played guitar together and the songs appeared from that, we followed it.

During your childhood, what kind of music did you listen to?

Hmmm… It’s a hard question!
Humm… C’est une question difficile!

Sorry! Désolée!

No, no, that’s okay. You know, I didn’t know much about music before I met Clark. It’s was all time free jazz, jazz jazz! He also know a lot about punk rock and early indie music from 80’s and 90’s. So, I started to listen that general period of music with him and I met his friends, and we began to play music. We really enjoyed playing music but I think now it’s the most serious thing we have done. We love what we do and we have a love for music and a respect for musicians.

Did you already play in Europe? Avez-vous déjà joué en Europe?

Well, it’s our first concert in Europe! And we are going to play in Germany soon.

With a real drummer this time? Avec un vrai batteur cette fois?

Haha, no! We have a drum machine, his name is Sammy! He will be with us for a while.

But he is sometimes capricious! Mais il est parfois un peu capricieux!

Yes! We actually came with an another drum machine who’s name is Clen. But he, he… died.
Oui!

Do you express yourself with an another kind of art, or just music?

Music is just one facet of the band.

And when you are composing your songs, have you images in your head that inspire you for your music?

You know, the songs are happening outside you and you’re working on it yourself, so you hear the song and respond to it. Images are certainly part of that. It’s almost like a voyage as well. Going somewhere.

So, who are photographs and film directors that you like?

Well, I guess I watch more films than I look at photography. I like Jacques Rivette and one of my favorite is Chris Marker. But also Woody Allen, and… there is too much!

Thank you for this very informal interview!
Merci pour cette interview improvisée!

Oh no, it’s fine. Thank you! And thank your for coming too. Maybe see you in Brooklyn.
Oh non, c’est cool. Merci! Et merci d’être venue aussi. On se verra peut être à Brooklyn.

It was nice meeting you, have a dice day! Bye. Heu… j’suis vraiment idiote.
Salut. Heu… I’m so stupid!

No, no it’s okay. I do the same things all the time, the night I say « good morning » and the day I say « good night ».

Yay, Wednesday speaks our language very well. Finally, we could have interviewed her in French!

The little history behind The Fruhstucks is a huge story of love. They both don’t care about each other’s background. They just care about love. « We’re in love and this is love. »

When I asked to Sutja about their influences and their musical education, he said: « We are both musicians who don’t really give a fuck about perfection. We just go on ’til the end as good and fast as possible. We are athletes. We just run. »

What I like the most when I’m listening to their music is all these visions that I see disentangling slowly in my head. It’s like something magical is going to happen. Two roses who love each other and wilting in a vase, memos and a subway map on a wall papered with cork, Batman with the ears of a rabbit which strikes the pose on a floral sofa, a great afternoon in a glamor amusement park and then some palm trees on a blue summer background.
It is through these images that the band keep up seeking new ways of expressing their sound. « We feel the reverb, the echoes and the delays of our music in the distorted images that we make. »

And because The Fruhstucks is an amazing band, this is a lovely musical selection that they have chosen to share with you:

1. John Brion – Phone Call
« It’s a beauty song, when we have problems, we listen all the John Brion’s songs. »

2. Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Menopause Man
« It’s a really beauty song, like Ariel we think that « the woman is the future ». »

3. Buddy Holly – Everyday
« It’s a nice classic song of our school’s days, it makes us feel happy. »

4. Women – Eyesore
« It’s a new song of that band, we think is the most recent and we like it. »

In a few words, The Fruhstucks are « two musicians, some distance and several songs performed to make your ears fall in love, yesterday, today and tomorrow. »

Thanks for this lovely little interview, I wish you the best!

I always adored the work of Jean Painlevé, a French filmmaker, scriptwriter and translator who distinguished himself by his beautiful scientific documentaries. With his work « Liquid Crystals » (1978), he holds on the observation of the forms movement, transformations, metamorphoses, color variations. We see the transition of phase of the speeded-up liquid crystals there, we discover unstable and imperceptible forms. That pulses, and it’s a perpetual conversion. The structures evolve, taking the consistency of glass then sand or liquid.

Maybe you remember the beautiful album « The Sounds of the Sounds of Science » (Egon, on 2002) by the very great Yo La Tengo, eight instrumental tracks investigating with magnificence the aquatic world seen by Jean Painlevé.

I recently discovered a new version of the video « Liquid crystals », it is not the music of François de Roubaix anymore that accompanies it but one of the indie rock band Vitamins. Crawford, one of the members sent me an e-mail to talk about the video, I finally decided to make a mini-interview in order that you know more about his band which comes from Denver, enjoy!

Hi Vitamins !

Coucou Vitamins!

Greetings! Welcome to the music of Vitamins. We hope you stay for a while, and thanks for coming!

Salut!

Can you tell me more about your music band?

Vitamins began with Ryan, Lizzy, and Crawford with former member Gary in Northern Colorado five years ago. When we moved to Denver, we switched things around, Matt plays with the band now and he’s also the main man behind our recorded sounds. Music has been the biggest part of all of our lives ever since we can’t remember. We’re all excellent friends and have a mutual passion for music and art, so it made sense for us to do that together in a band.

Why you choose Jean Painlevé’s video for illustrate « Liquid Crystals »?

We were inspired to do our own score for Jean Painlevé’s film after watching it with the music that Yo La Tengo composed for « Sounds of Science. » We felt like we could do a good job of matching the visuals with one of our recent songs, and it turned out to work really well. We wanted to bring out the liquid nature that sound and music can have, and use that to represent the film in a new way. It should be noted that Danny Shyman from Josephine & the Mousepeople helped to compose and record the piece with Matt (from Vitamins).

I read that you also like the music of Yo la Tengo, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Pavement, Neil Young and Elliott Smith. What are your other influences and your projects?

We love so many kinds of music: jazz, rock, folk, kraut-rock, hip hop, punk, noise, dance… Too many bands to list. We put out a record called « Songs for Stem Cells » last year, and we’re working on a new record we hope to release in the fall. Our music is always evolving and we’re really excited about where it will take us next !

Thank you Vitamins, love. See you.

Merci Vitamins, plein d’amour et à bientôt.

Thanks, Lea Mandana. You rock our collective world. xxxxxxxxxxxxxo

Merci, Lea Mandana. Tu déchires, c’était cool. Bisous.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Happy BIRTHDAY!

Ah ouais, j’allais oublier! Joyeux ANNIVERSAIRE!

Hi everybody, I’m going to discover the urban jungle of Brooklyn for the whole month of August. I’ll share with you each new music things that I discover. For a little history, I met Matt at the Real Estate show at le Café de la Danse, May 26, 2010. I couldn’t wait till August to have some answers about his music project Ducktails, so I decided to interview him by mail. Here is my first Delicious Scope, I hope that you will like it!

Well, could you introduce yourself and your music to our readers?

Hello, my name is Matt Mondanile and I play in Ducktails and Real Estate. Two bands from New Jersey.

I’ve discovered your music by following a label that I really like, Olde English Speeling Bee, can you say a few words about this?

Olde English Spelling Bee is a really cool label run out of Brooklyn by one man. He has been doing different record labels for a while. Before OESB, he had a label called Bobby Jay Records.

When did you start playing music and recording and why?

I started playing music when I was in middle school, probably around 12. My first instrument was the drums. I started taking lessons when I was around 10 or so. Then I got really into guitar later on and my friend Julian Lynch helped me learn guitar. We also had the same guitar teacher, Tony Scally, also from New Jersey.

Can you tell me more about your others music projects The Parasails, Predator Vision and Real Estate?

The Parasails is a tape I made that had a little different feel than Ducktails, so I named it differently and presented it as a different release. Predator Vision hasn’t played for a while, but we are a psych kraut kinda band where we jam and take drugs. That hasn’t happened for a while. Real Estate is a pop band that I play guitar in, I write some of the songs and guitar parts.

I also read the article about « chillwave » in the Japan Times, and I’m totally agree with « Whatever you do, don’t call it « chillawave » « , can you explain why you hate this term and why tapes are so important to you?

I don’t mind the term. It’s just stupid. Tapes are important because they are physical and real unlike CD’s or download cards. If you throw a tape at someone, it will hurt them. Tapes are heavy.

I recently saw that you like the band Cleaners from Venus and Charles Berlitz which is so great! Why do you like this sound and Pacific City, and what are your others influences?

This sound to me is very natural and organic. It is someone recording music in there basement or somewhere for themselves for creative purposes not for anyone else. It is like peeking in on someone’s world and being invisible. Without them knowing who you are.

You also did shows in beautiful countries like New Zealand and Australia, can you tell me what can be your next dream travel show?

I think my next dream travel show will be in either Greece, Turkey, or Israel. I am touring there with Dolphins into the Future in September.

You just came back from tours in Europe and California with Real Estate, what are your best memories?

The Primavera Festival in Barcelona was amazing. It was the biggest show I ever played. I looked at sailboats and cruise ships in the ocean while I played on a huge stage. After Primavera, I went solo to Lisbon, Portugal. I spent about a week there. It was the best time. I love Portugal and this was my third time there. It totally rules. I want to move there really bad. I have a friend there named Marta and she has a scooter. So I spent a week on the back of her scooter, just hanging around. I also played a Ducktails show there and it was awesome. They showed a Sublime Frequencies film before my set which is called « My Friend Rain ».

When I’m listening to your music, it’s always tropical summer in my ears. What is a perfect summer day for you?

A perfect summer day to me… riding in a car after going swimming. Sleeping in a sleeping bag outside next to a river in Big Sur, CA. Riding on the back of Marta’s scooter.

What are your dream projects now? A thing that you want to share?

I am working on a new record called Ducktails III : Arcade Dynamics. It is going to be released by Woodsist in Autumn. I am pumped about it. When I get a little bit older and get wrinkles, I am going to make an epic Italo Disco records with lots of big bulky equipment. Hopefully I won’t live with my parents by then.

Thank you Lea !!!

P.S. : The (or one of the) best episode of the a m a z i n g TV show Seinfeld?

My favorite episode of Seinfeld is where Jerry and George devise a plan so that George can get with his current girlfriend’s roommate. The Roommate Switch!

Byye! Pizza time.

Thanks Matt, see you soon.

[MP3] Ducktails – Mirror Image

Ducktails – « Mirror Image 7 inch » is out on Shdwply Records, a cool independent record label from Norfolk, Virginia.

Matt has just started a new blog « Free Index », check this here.
