The Fruhstucks est une histoire d’amour passionnée qui nous vient de Castellón, en Espagne. Ils ne se soucient pas de la formation de l’un et l’autre, mais seulement de l’amour. « On est amoureux, et The Fruhstucks c’est l’amour. »

Quand j’ai demandé à Sutja quelles étaient son éducation et ses influences musicales, il m’a répondu: « On est juste deux musiciens qui n’ont en vraiment rien à branler d’atteindre la perfection. On est dans l’optique de jouer à fond les ballons et de prendre du plaisir jusqu’à la fin. On est des athlètes, on ne fait que courir. »

Ce que j’aime le plus quand j’écoute leur musique, ce sont toutes ces visions que je vois défiler lentement dans ma tête. Un peu comme si quelque chose de magique allait arriver. Deux roses qui s’aiment et se fanent dans un vase, des mémos et un plan de métro sur un mur tapissé de liège, un Batman aux oreilles de lapin qui prend la pose sur un canapé floral, une chouette après-midi dans un chic parc d’attraction et puis quelques palmiers sur un fond bleu d’été.
C’est à travers ces images que le groupe recherche sans cesse de nouvelles manières d’exprimer leur son. « On sent vraiment la reverbe et les échos de notre musique dans les représentations que nous créons. »

The little history behind The Fruhstucks is a huge story of love. They both don’t care about each other’s background. They just care about love. « We’re in love and this is love. »

When I asked to Sutja about their influences and their musical education, he said: « We are both musicians who don’t really give a fuck about perfection. We just go on ’til the end as good and fast as possible. We are athletes. We just run. »

What I like the most when I’m listening to their music is all these visions that I see disentangling slowly in my head. It’s like something magical is going to happen. Two roses who love each other and wilting in a vase, memos and a subway map on a wall papered with cork, Batman with the ears of a rabbit which strikes the pose on a floral sofa, a great afternoon in a glamor amusement park and then some palm trees on a blue summer background.
It is through these images that the band  keep up seeking new ways of expressing their sound. « We feel the reverb, the echoes and the delays of our music in the distorted images that we make. »

J’ai toujours raffolé du travail de Jean Painlevé, réalisateur scénariste et traducteur français qui s’est distingué par ses jolis documentaires scientifiques. C’est dans son œuvre les Cristaux Liquides (1978), qu’il s’attarde sur l’observation du mouvement des formes, des transformations, des mues, des variations de couleurs. On y voit la transition de phase des cristaux liquides en accéléré, on y découvre des formes mouvantes et insaisissables. Ça pulse, et ça se transforme constamment. Les structures évoluent, prenant la consistance de verre puis de sable ou de liquide.

Peut-être vous souvenez vous du très bel album « The Sounds of the Sounds of Science » (Egon, 2002) des très chouettes Yo La Tengo, huit titres instrumentaux explorant avec somptuosité le monde aquatique vu par Jean Painlevé.

J’ai récemment découvert une nouvelle version de la vidéo « Cristaux Liquides », ce n’est plus la musique de François de Roubaix qui l’accompagne mais celle du groupe d’indie rock Vitamins. Crawford, membre du groupe m’a envoyé un mail hier soir pour discuter de ce travail, j’ai décidé de faire une mini-interview afin de vous faire découvrir son groupe qui vient de Denver, bonne lecture et écoute à vous tous.

I always adored the work of Jean Painlevé, a French filmmaker, scriptwriter and translator who distinguished himself by his beautiful scientific documentaries. With his work « Liquid Crystals » (1978), he holds on the observation of the forms movement, transformations, metamorphoses, color variations. We see the transition of phase of the speeded-up liquid crystals there, we discover unstable and imperceptible forms. That pulses, and it’s a perpetual conversion. The structures evolve, taking the consistency of glass then sand or liquid.

Maybe you remember the beautiful album « The Sounds of the Sounds of Science » (Egon, on 2002) by the very great Yo La Tengo, eight instrumental tracks investigating with magnificence the aquatic world seen by Jean Painlevé.

I recently discovered a new version of the video « Liquid crystals », it is not the music of François de Roubaix anymore that accompanies it but one of the indie rock band Vitamins. Crawford, one of the members sent me an e-mail to talk about the video, I finally decided to make a mini-interview in order that you know more about his band which comes from Denver, enjoy!

Can you tell me more about your music band?

Peux-tu nous en dire plus à propos de ton groupe de musique?

Vitamins began with Ryan, Lizzy, and Crawford with former member Gary in Northern Colorado five years ago. When we moved to Denver, we switched things around, Matt plays with the band now and he’s also the main man behind our recorded sounds. Music has been the biggest part of all of our lives ever since we can’t remember. We’re all excellent friends and have a mutual passion for music and art, so it made sense for us to do that together in a band.

L’aventure Vitamins a débuté il y a cinq ans, dans le nord du Colorado avec Ryan, Lizzy, Crawford et Gary (un ancien membre du groupe). Puis on s’est installé à Denver, et là, on a commencé à faire plein de nouvelles choses avec Matt qui joue dans Vitamins maintenant, il s’occupe aussi d’enregister les sons. La musique a toujours occupée la plus grande partie de notre vie, à tel point que je ne peux pas dire à quand ça remonte! Nous sommes tous de très bons amis et partageons notre passion pour la musique et l’art, du coup c’était logique de réunir tout ça dans un groupe.

Why you choose Jean Painlevé’s video for illustrate « Liquid Crystals »?

Pourquoi avez-vous choisi la vidéo de Jean Painlevé pour illustrer « Liquid Crystals »?

We were inspired to do our own score for Jean Painlevé’s film after watching it with the music that Yo La Tengo composed for « Sounds of Science. » We felt like we could do a good job of matching the visuals with one of our recent songs, and it turned out to work really well. We wanted to bring out the liquid nature that sound and music can have, and use that to represent the film in a new way. It should be noted that Danny Shyman from Josephine & the Mousepeople helped to compose and record the piece with Matt (from Vitamins).

Nous avions envie de faire notre propre réalisation après avoir vu le film de Jean Painlevé avec la musique de Yo La Tengo composée pour « Sounds of Science ». Nous nous sentions capable de faire un joli travail en mélangeant ces visuels avec une de nos nouvelles chansons, ça a super bien marché. Nous voulions révéler la nature liquide qu’a cette musique en utilisant ce film pour le présenter d’une nouvelle manière. Danny Shyman du groupe Josephine & the Mousepeople nous a aidé a composer et enregistrer ce morceau avec Matt (de Vitamins).

I read that you also like the music of Yo la Tengo, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Pavement, Neil Young and Elliott Smith. What are your other influences and your projects?

J’ai lu que vous aimiez aussi la musique de Yo la Tengo, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Pavement, Neil Young et Elliott Smith. Quelles sont vos autres influences et vos projets?

We love so many kinds of music: jazz, rock, folk, kraut-rock, hip hop, punk, noise, dance… Too many bands to list. We put out a record called « Songs for Stem Cells » last year, and we’re working on a new record we hope to release in the fall. Our music is always evolving and we’re really excited about where it will take us next !

Nous aimons tellement de genres musicaux: jazz, rock, folk, kraut-rock, hip hop, punk, noise, dance… Beaucoup trop de groupes à citer. Nous avons sorti notre album « Songs for Stem Cells » l’an dernier, et nous sommes actuellement en train de travailler sur un nouveau disque, nous espérons le sortir d’ici la fin de l’année. Notre musique évolue continuellement et nous sommes très enthousiastes pour la suite !

Hi everybody, I’m going to discover the urban jungle of Brooklyn for the whole month of August. I’ll share with you each new music things that I discover. For a little history, I met Matt at the Real Estate show at le Café de la Danse, May 26, 2010. I couldn’t wait till August to have some answers about his music project Ducktails, so I decided to interview him by mail. Here is my first Delicious Scope, I hope that you will like it!

Well, could you introduce yourself and your music to our readers?

Hello, my name is Matt Mondanile and I play in Ducktails and Real Estate. Two bands from New Jersey.

I’ve discovered your music by following a label that I really like, Olde English Speeling Bee, can you say a few words about this?

Olde English Spelling Bee is a really cool label run out of Brooklyn by one man. He has been doing different record labels for a while. Before OESB, he had a label called Bobby Jay Records.

When did you start playing music and recording and why?

I started playing music when I was in middle school, probably around 12. My first instrument was the drums. I started taking lessons when I was around 10 or so. Then I got really into guitar later on and my friend Julian Lynch helped me learn guitar. We also had the same guitar teacher, Tony Scally, also from New Jersey.

Can you tell me more about your others music projects The Parasails, Predator Vision and Real Estate?

The Parasails is a tape I made that had a little different feel than Ducktails, so I named it differently and presented it as a different release. Predator Vision hasn’t played for a while, but we are a psych kraut kinda band where we jam and take drugs. That hasn’t happened for a while. Real Estate is a pop band that I play guitar in, I write some of the songs and guitar parts.

I also read the article about « chillwave » in the Japan Times, and I’m totally agree with « Whatever you do, don’t call it « chillawave » « , can you explain why you hate this term and why tapes are so important to you?

I don’t mind the term.  It’s just stupid. Tapes are important because they are physical and real unlike CD’s or download cards. If you throw a tape at someone, it will hurt them. Tapes are heavy.

I recently saw that you like the band Cleaners from Venus and Charles Berlitz which is so great! Why do you like this sound and Pacific City, and what are your others influences?

This sound to me is very natural and organic. It is someone recording music in there basement or somewhere for themselves for creative purposes not for anyone else. It is like peeking in on someone’s world and being invisible. Without them knowing who you are.

You also did shows in beautiful countries like New Zealand and Australia, can you tell me what can be your next dream travel show?

I think my next dream travel show will be in either Greece, Turkey, or Israel. I am touring there with Dolphins into the Future in September.

You just came back from tours in Europe and California with  Real Estate, what are your best memories?

The Primavera Festival in Barcelona was amazing. It was the biggest show I ever played. I looked at sailboats and cruise ships in the ocean while I played on a huge stage. After Primavera, I went solo to Lisbon, Portugal. I spent about a week there. It was the best time. I love Portugal and this was my third time there. It totally rules. I want to move there really bad. I have a friend there named Marta and she has a scooter. So I spent a week on the back of her scooter, just hanging around. I also played a Ducktails show there and it was awesome. They showed a Sublime Frequencies film before my set which is called « My Friend Rain ».

When I’m listening to your music, it’s always tropical summer in my ears. What is a perfect summer day for you?

A perfect summer day to me… riding in a car after going swimming. Sleeping in a sleeping bag outside next to a river in Big Sur, CA. Riding on the back of Marta’s scooter.

What are your dream projects now? A thing that you want to share?

I am working on a new record called Ducktails III : Arcade Dynamics. It is going to be released by Woodsist in Autumn. I am pumped about it. When I get a little bit older and get wrinkles, I am going to make an epic Italo Disco records with lots of big bulky equipment. Hopefully I won’t live with my parents by then.

Delicious Scopitone: One of your melodies (Lions) reminds me of a child-game song; you’ve been working with puppets; we also hear children’s voices on some of your songs. As an artist, do you feel connected with the child you’ve been? Or has it something to do with your recording process, using the sounds that surround you, whatever they are?Do you consider those sounds like an inspiration, or do you pick them up only when you need them?

Une de tes musiques (Lions) me rappelle l’air d’un jeu d’enfant; tu as travaillé avec des marionnettes; on entend aussi des voix d’enfants dans certaines de tes chansons. En tant qu’artiste, te sens-tu connectée avec l’enfant que tu étais? Ou est-ce quelque chose qui a à voir avec ta façon d’enregistrer, d’utiliser les sons qui t’entourent, quels qu’ils soient ? Considères-tu ces sons comme une inspiration ou les utilises-tu uniquement quand tu en as besoin ?

tUnE yArDs: I was a nanny when I began recording Bird-Brains; I was very inspired by the innocence and endless curiosity of the child I cared for. I think in many ways he is what allowed me to finally stop judging myself and my work and allow the songs and recordings to happen. I remembered how important music was to me as a kid, and I saw how much kids around me were affected by it. How important it was to movement, and dance, and feeling life and joy around us.
I think so many of those childhood melodies and tunes are deeply embedded in my brain, so they just come out when I make music. And then I think it’s pretty creepy and cool to bring childhood back into adult music, because we tend to cover up our younger selves in life, when really there’s a lot of interesting stuff to be explored there. A lot of stuff, maybe, they we should take a look at, about how we became who we are.
And are those sounds inspirations? Definitely. All sounds are, and were, when I recorded. They were both practical and emotional: I needed a percussion instrument, for instance, and what I had was a child’s sneeze, which then added an emotional aspect to that song, Jamaican, I think.

Je travaillais comme nounou quand j’ai commencé à enregistrer Bird-Brains; l’innocence et la curiosité permanentes de l’enfant dont je m’occupais m’ont beaucoup inspirée. Je pense que de bien des façons c’est lui qui m’a finalement permis d’arrêter de me juger, moi et mon travail, et de laisser les chansons et les enregistrements se faire. Je me souviens combien la musique était importante pour moi enfant, et j’ai vu à quel point les enfants autour de moi étaient touchés par elle. A quel point c’est important pour bouger, danser et ressentir la joie et la vie autour de nous.
Je pense que beaucoup de ces mélodies pour enfants sont profondément gravées dans ma mémoire, donc elles ressortent quand je fais de la musique. Et je pense aussi que c’était plutôt bizarre et cool de remettre de l’enfance dans de la musique d’adulte, parce que dans la vie de tous les jours, on a tendance à dissimuler l’enfant qui est en nous, alors qu’il y a beaucoup de choses à explorer là-dedans. Beaucoup de choses auxquelles, peut-être, nous devrions jeter un oeil, pour voir comment nous sommes devenus ce que que nous sommes.
Est-ce que ces sons sont une inspiration ? Carrément. Tous les sons le sont et l’ont été pendant que j’enregistrais. Ils sont tout à la fois concrêts et sensibles: j’ai eu besoin d’une percussion, par exemple et ce dont je disposais, c’était un éternuement d’enfant, qui, de fait, a ajouté un aspect émotionnel à cette chanson, « Jamaican » je pense.

DS: You lived in Africa for a few weeks, did you learn to sing in a traditional African way (like you do on Hatari) when you were there, or is something that came « naturally » to you?

Tu as vécu quelques semaines en Afrique, as-tu appris à chanter à la manière des chants traditionnels africains (comme ce que tu le fais sur Hatari) quand tu étais là-bas ou est-ce quelque chose qui t’es venu « naturellement » ?

T.Y: I was in Kenya for 6 months on a study abroad program. I learned about music there, mostly Taarabu* from the Swahili coast. The Hatari vocals are me doing a poor imitation, or at best, learning from, Pygmy music from Central African Republic. A friend gave me a CD of that music after I had injured my voice from singing on tour and thought I’d never be able to sing through a break in my voice. So I had started to sing above and below it, back and forth, which was like yodeling. The Pygmy music fulfilled a desire I have for odd-meter rhythms, and intersecting lines. Three, four, or five individual parts that have their own phrasing and color and rhythmic structure but which come together to weave this very complicated cloth of sound. Ahhhhhhhhh. For someone who does not know much music theory, it is good to be awed by music that is learned by ear. And to imitate feel and how music affects the body and the breath versus learning something on paper, which is also incredible, but a very different experience.

J’ai passé 6 mois au Kenya dans le cadre d’un programme d’études à l’étranger. Là-bas j’ai appris des choses sur la musique, surtout sur le Taarabu*, sur la côte swahili. Les voix sur Hatari, c’est moi en faisant une pâle imitation, au mieux en train d’apprendre cette musique pygmée de République d’Afrique Centrale. Un ami m’a offert un CD de cette musique après que je me sois cassée la voix durant une tournée et que je croyais ne plus jamais pouvoir passer la cassure de ma voix. Alors j’ai commencé à chanter au-dessus et en-dessous, dans un va-et-vient, ce qui ressemblait à du yodel. La musique des Pygmées a exaucé mon désir de rythmes aux mesures irrégulières et de croisement des lignes musicales. Trois, quatre ou cinq parties indivuelles qui ont leur propre phrasé, couleur et structure rythmique mais qui se retrouvent ensemble pour former la trame de ce tissu de sons très complexe. Ahhhhhhhhh. Pour quelqu’un qui n’y connait pas grand chose en théorie musicale, c’est agréable d’être impressionné par une musique qui s’apprend à l’oreille. Et copier le feeling, comment la musique affecte le corps et la respiration vs apprendre quelque chose sur le papier, ce qui est également une expérience incroyable, mais très différente.

DS: Your sister Ruth and your mum are also musicians, it seems to be a family business. Can you tell us about your musical education ? How did you get to make your own music?

Ta soeur Ruth et ta mère sont également musiciennes, ç’a l’air d’être une affaire de famille. Peux-tu nous parler de ton éducation musicale ? Comment en es-tu arrivée à faire ta propre musique ?

T.Y: My dad is a musician too, my parents met playing for folk dances. I had music all around me as a kid, and musicians all around me. Singing, harmonizing, going to a summer Early Music program with my mom where she taught harpsichord and hearing the viola da gamba ensembles through the trees…I took piano from my mom from age 6-13, and my dad taught me fiddle tunes in high school. I think I never thought I, too, would be a musician, but I feel blessed that I have so much music and musicality in me to make it my profession now.

Mon père est également musicien, mes parents se sont rencontrés en jouant des danses folkloriques. Lorsque j’étais enfant, j’étais entourée de musique et de plein de musiciens. Chanter, harmoniser, aller au programme d’été d’Eveil Musical avec ma mère, où elle enseignanit le clavecin et écouter les ensembles de violes de gambe à travers les arbres… J’ai appris le piano avec ma mère entre 6 et 13 ans et mon père m’a enseigné des airs de violon au lycée. Je pense que je n’ai jamais envisagé que je serais une musicienne, moi aussi, mais je me suis sentie bénie d’avoir eu autant de musique et de musicalité autour de moi et de pouvoir en faire mon métier aujourd’hui.

DS: My first question was about childhood connection but the words in your album, BiRd-BrAiNs, are woman’s words. Sounds like you have some bones to pick with somebody…and that you’re not so bird-brained…

Ma première question portait sur la connection à l’enfance mais les textes de ton album sont des textes de femme. On dirait que tu as des comptes à régler avec quelqu’un…et que tu n’es pas si « tête en l’air »…

T.Y: No bones to pick, just getting stuff out of my system, processing it. Yep, I’m 30, I’m a grown-up, and pretty smart, I guess.

Pas de comptes à régler, juste des choses à éliminer en cours de fabrication. Ouais, j’ai 30 ans, je suis adulte et plutôt maline je crois.

DS: In the booklet you end your presentation with the words « you can do it ». Do you think an artist has to encourage the other people to express themselves ? Does it have something to do with commited art ?

Les derniers mots dans le livret de l’album sont « tu peux le faire ». Penses-tu qu’un artiste doit encourager les autres à s’exprimer ? Est-ce que cela a quelque chose à voir avec l’art engagé ?

T.Y: I had to say that to myself all the time when making that album, and I still do it a lot. I thought it might help someone else, too. Not just other artists. There are often voices in many people’s heads that tell them they shouldn’t or can’t do something, even when it’s the thing they’re called to do. So no matter what it is that someone feels passionate about, I think each of us could use a miniature cheerleader calling from somewhere far away, “You can do it!”
On the cassette that I first released, side A said, “you can do it” and B said, “put your back into it.”

J’ai dû tout le temps me le répeter à moi-même quand je faisais cet album et je continue de le faire. Je pense que cela peut aider d’autres gens aussi. Pas seulement des artistes. Souvent dans la tête de beaucoup de gens, il y a des voix qui leur disent qu’ils ne devraient ou qu’ils ne peuvent pas faire quelque chose, même quand c’est ce pourquoi ils sont fait. Alors peu importe ce qui passionne quelqu’un, je pense que chacun d’entre nous peut avoir recours à une mini pom-pom girl, qui lui crie de loin « tu peux le faire » !
Sur la cassette que j’avais tout d’abord sortie, face A j’avais mis « tu peux le faire » et face B  » met-toi au boulot ! »

Delicious Scopitone: Can you tell us about your influences, your musical education ?

Peux-tu nous parler de tes influences, de ton éducation musicale ?

Jordan Irvìn Dally: I have no real musical education. Everything I’ve learned has been from just studying music on my own.

Je n’ai pas vraiment d’éducation musicale. Tout ce que j’ai appris c’est en étudiant la musique par moi-même.

DS: You forgot to answer the question about your influences… Music, movies, books, anything…

Tu as oublié de répondre à la question sur tes influences… Musique, films, livres, n’importe quoi…

J.I.D: It seems people’s everyday lives influences them more than any art ever could & I honestly couldn’t tell you what doesn’t influence me these days… but I do listen to a lot of Keith Jarrett & it’d be a lie to say that didn’t have a profound effect on my view of music.

Il semble que la vie de tous les jours influence les gens plus qu’aucun art ne pourra jamais le faire et honnêtement je ne saurais dire par quoi je n’ai pas été influencé ces derniers temps… Mais j’écoute vraiment beaucoup de Keith Jarrett et je mentirais si je disais que cela n’a pas une profonde influence sur ma conception de la musique…

DS: What gave you a taste for music ?

Qu’est-ce qui t’a donné le goût de la musique ?

J.I.D: Originally, I was interested in guitar which I’ve been playing for 10 years now. Then I spent so much time playing & learning other instruments, music soon became the only thing I was good at – so I just kept playing.

Au départ, je me suis intéressé à la guitare, dont je joue depuis 10 ans maintenant. Puis j’ai passé beaucoup de temps à jouer et à apprendre d’autres instruments, et la musique est vite devenue la seule chose dans laquelle j’étais bon, donc j’ai continué à jouer.

DS: Emmanuel says you’re very young, about 20, when did you begin to play ? When did you begin to take it seriously ?

Emmanuel dit que tu es très jeune, une vingtaine d’années, quand as-tu commencé à jouer ? Quand as-tu commencé à prendre tout ça au sérieux ?

J.I.D: I’m 20 years old, been playing guitar for 10 years & writing music (seriously) for about 7 of those years.

J’ai 20 ans et sur les 10 ans que j’ai passés à jouer de la guitare, cela fait 7 ans que je compose (sérieusement) de la musique.

DS: The music you play with Brother is very dynamic, indeed wild sometimes… The music you play solo is much more peaceful. Did you need to emphasize the melodies ? Is it the reason why you started composing solo ?

La musique que tu joues avec Brother est très dynamique, voire même déchainée parfois… La musique que tu joues en solo est beaucoup plus calme. Voulais-tu mettre l’accent sur les mélodies ? Est-ce que c’est ce qui t’a amené à composer en solo ?

J.I.D: The music I made with Brother was very performance based, there was little focus on making quality music and more so focused on wanting people to dance at our concerts and have fun. When I record my solo music i think very little of the performance aspect and completely focus on making a quality song. Then once I’ve written and recorded the song I can re-write it to make it more interesting to watch and listen to live. To me, writing, recording, and performing are all different mediums of art.

I’ve always been composing my solo work, even while in Brother, I just have more time to focus on it now.

La musique que j’ai faite avec Brother était vraiment destinée être jouée en concert, on s’est peu préoccupé de faire de la musique de qualité, on était plus concentré sur le fait de vouloir faire danser les gens à nos concerts et de s’amuser. Quand je fais ma musique en solo, je pense très peu aux concerts et je suis uniquement concentré sur le fait d’écrire une bonne chanson. Ensuite une fois que j’ai écrit et enregistré la chanson, je peux la ré-écrire pour la rendre plus intéressante à écouter et à regarder en live. Pour moi, écrire, enregistrer et jouer en public sont trois médiums artistiques différents.

J’ai toujours écrit en solo, même du temps de Brother, j’ai juste plus de temps à y consacrer aujourd’hui.

DS: I’ve noticed that the way you play guitar on Shanidar sounds a little « spanish ». Did you compose it while you were in Spain ? Did you learn things about spanish way to play guitar ?

J’ai remarqué que la façon dont tu joues de la guitare sur Shanidar sonne un peu « espagnole ». L’as-tu composée quand tu étais en Espagne ? As-tu appris des choses sur le jeu de guitare espagnole ?

J.I.D: Shanidar – I actually wrote and recorded it before my time in spain, but i did learn a lot from the couple of flamenco shows I got to see – some of those things I learned will probably be showing up on the next set of recordings I make.

Shanidar. En fait je l’ai écrite et enregistrée avant mon séjour en Espagne, mais j’ai effectivement beaucoup appris lors des deux concerts flamenco que je suis allé voir. Quelques-uns des trucs que j’ai appris ressortiront probablement dans mes prochaines sessions d’enregistrement.

DS: Music aside, what are you interested in ?

Musique mise à part, à quoi t’intéresses-tu ?

J.I.D: I’m interested in learning first hand. Right now i want learn to break horses – it was a something my relatives (on both sides of my family) have been doing for generations.

Ce qui m’intéresse, c’est de faire de nouvelles expériences. En ce moment j’ai envie d’apprendre à dresser les chevaux (c’est quelque chose que l’on fait, des deux côtés de ma famille, depuis des générations)

DS: Tell me about Jeune Eté Records and Camaraderie Limited, how does it go with them ? I know you’re gonna release an EP with Camaraderie, can you tell us about this EP, about the songs, about its tittle. Why calling it « despistado » ?

Peux-tu me parler de Jeune Eté Records et de Camaraderie Limited, comment cela s’est passé avec eux ? Je sais que tu dois prochainement sortir un EP avec Camaraderie, peux-tu nous parler de cet EP, des chansons dessus, de son titre. Pourquoi l’avoir appelé « Despistado » ?

J.I.D: I contacted Jeune Eté about two years ago about releasing an album. it was my first full-length and their first release as a label and it was a real good experience for both of us. James True, the one running the label is a great guy. Camaraderie Limited contacted me about releasing an EP and it worked out that they wanted to release the disc while I had planned to be in Spain.

The name of the album came from a conversation I had with one of my professors in Madrid, when he told me I was ‘despistado’ because i wasn’t paying attention in class and he told me that I just seemed not to be all there. I feel like that one word captured the mood of the album fairly well.

J’ai contacté Jeune Eté il y a environ deux ans, pour sortir un album. C’était mon premier album et leur première sortie en tant que label et cela été vraiment une super expérience pour nous tous. James True, le directeur du label, est un type génial. Camaraderie Limited m’a contacté pour sortir un EP et c’était prévu de le sortir pendant que j’étais en Espagne.

Le titre du EP est venu d’une conversation avec un de mes profs à Madrid, où il m’a dit que j’étais « despistado » parce que je n’écoutais pas en cours et que j’avais l’air totalement absent. Je pense que ce mot résume vraiment bien l’esprit de cet album.

DS: How do you write your songs ? Words and music separately ? Composing music with the guitar and then add other instruments ? What’s you favourite place for writing music ?

Comment écris-tu tes chansons ? Musique et paroles séparément ? Composes-tu la musique à la guitare puis ajoutes-tu les autres instruments ensuite ? Quel est ton endroit préféré pour écrire de la musique ?

J.I.D: I’ve written a lot of songs, and I can’t really say that I have one solid way of writing a song. « Wild Things » only took me maybe two hours to write and record, whereas « The Little Ones » took me about 2 months to finish. « Salt Water » was a recording project I started a couple years ago then I finally finished recording and editing while I was in Madrid this past fall.

Like most artists, i usually just work better when I’m isolated. It seems to help the ideas come out as i think of them.

J’ai écrit beaucoup de chansons et je ne peux pas vraiment dire si j’ai une méthode bien définie pour composer. Wild Things m’a pris peut-être deux heures pour être écrite et enregistrée, tandis que The Little Ones n’a été finie qu’au bout de deux mois. Salt Water était un projet d’enregistrement que j’avais commencé deux ans auparavant et que j’ai finalement fini d’enregistrer quand j’étais à Madrid l’automne dernier.

Comme la plupart des artistes, je travaille habituellement mieux quand je suis isolé. Il semble que cela aide les idées à venir lorsque je pense aux chansons.

DS: And, Emmanuel wants to know more about Wild Things, what inspired you ?

Et, Emmanuel voudrait en savoir plus sur Wild Things, qu’est-ce qui t’a inspiré ?

J.I.D: « Wild Things » (like I said), only took a short time to write but it was the product of a few weeks spent alone. The song practically wrote itself, to the point where I didn’t even take the time to write the lyrics down, I just started recording. I think it was three in the morning when i started putting the song together and I couldn’t sleep till it was finished.

Il ne m’a pas fallu longtemps, comme je l’ai dit, pour écrire Wild Things, mais elle est le résultat de deux semaines passées seul. La chanson s’est pratiquement écrite toute seule, à tel point que je n’ai même pas pris le temps de mettre les paroles par écrit, j’ai directement commencé à enregistrer. Je pense qu’il était trois heures du matin quand j’ai commencé à travailler cette chanson et je n’ai pas pu dormir avant qu’elle ne soit finie.

DS: And also, your favourite artists in 2009 ?

Et aussi, quels ont été tes artistes préférés en 2009 ?

J.I.D: My top albums for the year were Grizzly Bear (Veckatimest), Neko Case (Middle Cyclone) and Antony & the Johnsons (The Crying Light).

In general I wasn’t too impressed with the music of 2009, but i think those three albums are true quality albums.

[MP3] DM Stith – A Soft Seduction (David Byrne cover)

Delicious Scopitone: I’ve read that you own some vinyl collections of 50’s-60’s love songs. Did you cover The Ronettes-Be My Baby because you like it and/or because one of your songs has the same title ?

J’ai lu que tu possèdes une collection de chansons d’amour des 50’s-60’s en vinyl. As-tu repris Be My Baby des Ronettes parce que tu aimes cette chanson et/ou parce que l’une des tiennes a le même titre ?

DM Stith: I love Be My Baby! — I was pretty obsessed with Phil Spektor and his wall of sound a decade ago, scrambling to hear every thing Phil touched, and this Ronettes song was my favorite of the bunch. Also, before that, while I was still in high school, I used to work at a laundromat which played the 50’s station constantly. Each 5 or 6 hour shift was a time warp for me. I still smell the fabric softener when I hear a 50’s love song.

J’adore Be My Baby ! Il y’a une dizaine d’années, j’étais presque obsédé par Phil Spektor et son « mur de son », je me suis précipité sur tout ce qu’il avait fait, mais cette chanson des Ronettes était ma préférée du lot. Et aussi, avant ça, alors que j’étais encore au lycée, je travaillais dans une laverie automatique, avec en fond sonore une radio qui diffusait en permanence des airs des 50’s. Les journées de travail étaient pour moi une faille spatio-temporelle. Je sens encore l’odeur de l’adoucissant quand j’entends une chanson des années 50.

DS: Your cover is very far from the original, very personal. Have you something to say about it, how you’ve « re-written » it…?

Ta reprise est très éloignée de l’original, très personnelle. Comment expliques-tu cela ?

DMS: I tend to use background voices a lot in my songs — this has to do with my creative process. I use high vocal lines to help sketch out parts for other instruments. Sometimes I become attached to these little sketch lines and I end up leaving them in the final recording. Be My Baby has such an iconic background vocal part (the echo of be my baby on the chorus) and I was thinking about shared suffering and group think and in some ways was feeling left out of that sort of involvement in art. I don’t think of my self as a voice for other people in the way that pop songwriters tend to bend their creative voice in order to accompany. So I decided, in order to sing this for myself, I’d need to let it be sort of desolate and trying. So I left out the background vocals and made the lead vocal in the chorus sound close to a wail.

J’ai tendance à utiliser beaucoup de choeurs dans mes chansons (cela a à voir avec mon processus créatif). J’utilise des lignes vocales aiguës pour m’aider à faire émerger les partitions pour d’autres instruments. Parfois j’en arrive à m’attacher à ces premières ébauches et finalement je les laisse dans la version définitive. Les choeurs dans Be My Baby sont tellement cultes (l’écho des « be my baby » dans le refrain) et j’avais en tête le « shared suffering »* et le « group think »** et quelque part je me sentais étranger à cette sorte de démarche artistique. Je ne me vois pas comme une voix à disposition des autres, dans le sens où les chanteurs pop ont tendance à orienter leur création vocale pour « accompagner ». Alors j’ai décidé, afin de la chanter pour moi, que j’aurais besoin de la laisser être, en quelque sorte, sombre et pénible. J’ai laissé tomber les choeurs et la voix principale sonne comme une plainte dans le refrain.

* shared suffering: méthode informatique qui consiste à formater le système de sorte à ce que le plus grand nombre puisse s’en servir, et de là, si un problème survient, il y a plus de chances que toutes ces personnes trouvent une solution.

** group think: groupe de réflexion où toute subjectivité est bannie, chacun doit se fondre dans la masse afin d’arriver à une sorte de consensus.

DS: One year ago, we could download Ichabod And Apple from a hidden page on dmstith.com, then you have released some of these first songs, but with new titles, Coal Hill 1 is now « Your God Is A Lion… » An Ambiguous Siren is « Lacuna A », well, why did you change the titles ?

Il y a un an, on pouvait télécharger Ichabod And Apple [sorte de recueil de ses premières démos] sur une page cachée de dmstith.com. Puis tu as sorti certaines de ces premières chansons, mais sous d’autres titres. Pourquoi les avoir modifiés ?

DMS: Aha! Well, I removed some of them from the site because I realized I might have more I want to do with these things. And also, I didn’t want these to be the first things people heard. These were song ideas — those names were something I gave them off the cuff. I think I felt that after I worked on them more, I wanted them to have titles more contiguous with my other works. But the titles still, for me anyway, evoke approximately the same thing. Coal Hill 1 and Your God is a Lion both seem ominous and dark — a shadowy form, not moving, full of history…

Aha ! Et bien, j’en ai supprimé quelques-unes parce que j’ai réalisé que j’aurais peut-être envie d’en faire quelque chose. Et aussi, je ne voulais pas que ce soit les premiers trucs que les gens écoutent. C’était des idées de chansons et je leur avais donné des titres vite fait. C’est après que je les aie retravaillées que j’ai voulu qu’elles aient des titres plus en relation avec mes autres morceaux. Mais de toute façon selon moi, les titres évoquent toujours à peu près la même chose. Coal Hill 1 [la Colline des Mines 1] et Your God Is A Lion Recently Fed, Drowsy [Votre Dieu Est Un Lion Qui Vient D'Être Nourri, Somnolent] sont tous deux menaçants et sombres, une forme imprécise, immobile, pleine d’histoire…

DS: Have you ever thought of songwriting before you met Shara Worden ? In all the interviews it sounds like you were only a listener until she gave you Protool. Was it that sudden ?

N’avais-tu jamais pensé à écrire des chansons avant de rencontrer Shara Worden ? Toutes les interviews donnent l’impression que tu n’étais qu’un auditeur avant qu’elle te donne Protool. Est-ce que c’est vraiment arrivé aussi subitement ?

DMS: I had a 4-track that I bought my senior year of high school which I brought with me to college. I used to record strange sounds of static on the radio, water heaters, arguments down the hall, sometimes my acoustic guitar… but these were things for myself and no one else. I didn’t start writing what I’d call « songs » until I met Shara. First thing was a song called « summersong » — it’s on Ichabod & Apple — which ends with a big cluster of me singing « sum-mer-time! » The song took me a day to write and record> yeah, it felt pretty sudden.

J’avais un 4pistes que j’avais acheté en dernière année au lycée et que j’ai emmené avec moi à la fac. J’enregistrais des bruits bizarres, des parasites à la radio, l’eau dans les radiateurs, des discussions dans les couloirs, parfois ma guitare accoustique… mais c’était des trucs pour moi et moi seul. Je n’ai commencé à écrire ce que j’appellerais des « chansons » qu’après avoir rencontré Shara. La première était une chanson intitulée « Summersong » (elle est sur I & A) qui se termine dans un gros cluster *** de ma voix scandant « sum-mer-time ! » Cela ne m’a pris qu’un jour pour l’écrire et l’enregistrer. Ouais, c’était plutôt soudain.
*** cluster: (ou grappe de sons voisins) agrégat de notes espacées d’un intervalle de secondes (merci wiki)

DS: A lot of critics said that Braid Of Voices is one of the best songs they ever heard, and it’s true it’s easy to enjoy it as a listener. Was it that easy too for you to write it ?

De nombreux critiques ont dit que Braid Of Voices est une des plus belles chansons qu’ils aient entendu, et c’est vrai que c’est facile de l’apprécier en tant qu’auditeur. Est-ce que cela a été aussi facile pour toi de l’écrire ?

DMS: Hmm. Braid of Voices sat with me for a long time. I didn’t own a piano, but a church about a mile from where I was living had given me a key so that I could write using their piano, but it had to be at night, after 9pm, because other wise, some part of the church building was in use and I could count on some strange noises or people walking around, which would have been very distracting. So, I’d spend 2 hours at a time playing those chords, maybe playing some others and just waiting for it to start feeling like a song. I have 8-9 minute sketches of the song in something close to what’s on Heavy Ghost (same with GMS — it was originally much much longer). I had been working on Braid of Voices for 5 months before I was forced to finish it. I went to San Diego to work with Rafter on mixing the record. We spent two weeks, and during the second week I tried to finish of Braid — it didn’t have any drums, and the majority of the choir on the second half was missing. It came together quickly in the end, but I had to wait for it. So no, not easy to write, though each part felt like a gift, I had to wait months between gifts.

Hmm. Braid of Voices est restée avec moi pendant longtemps. Je n’avais pas de piano, mais j’avais les clés d’une église, à environ 1,5km de chez moi, pour pouvoir aller composer sur leur piano, mais je devais y aller de nuit, après 21h, parce que sinon, l’église était ouverte et j’aurais dû faire avec les étranges bruits de pas des gens autour et cela aurait été très perturbant. Donc je passais deux heures à jouer ces accords à chaque fois, peut-être quelques autres et j’attendais juste que cela commence à ressembler à une chanson. J’ai des démos de 8-9 minutes de cette chanson, quelque chose d’assez proche de la version d’Heavy Ghost (pareil qu’avec GMS, qui était au départ beaucoup plus longue). J’ai travaillé sur Braid Of Voices pendant 5 mois avant d’être forcé de l’achever. Je suis allé à San Diego pour mixer l’album avec Rafter. On y a passé deux semaines, et pendant la deuxième semaine, j’ai essayé de finir Braid (je n’avais aucune percussion et il manquait la majeure partie des choeurs de la seconde moitié) Tout s’est mis en place très vite à la fin, mais j’ai dû attendre jusque là. Donc non, pas facile à composer, bien que chaque partie m’ait fait l’impression d’être un cadeau, j’ai dû attendre des mois entre chaque cadeau.

DS: And to finish two things I’ve noticed, though I’ve no real question to ask about:

You say you like walking, you also say that the first part of your writing process is done in your room, sitting at your desk. There are many (song)writers who create while walking. Are you a kind of « sitting-at-desk-artist » ? -I know it’s sounds like a joke-

Pour finir, deux choses que j’ai remarquées, sans avoir vraiment de question à ce propos:

Tu dis que tu aimes marcher et aussi que la première partie de ton travail d’écriture se fait dans ta chambre, assis à ton bureau. Beaucoup d’auteurs (de chanson) créent en marchant. Es-tu une sorte « d’artiste-qui-crée-assis » ? -je sais, ç’a l’air d’une blague-

DMS: I usually sit at some point in the process, but not necessarily in the beginning. I write lyrics at my desk, and I record all my sketches in my bedroom at something like a desk, but I don’t listen best at my desk, so I tend to take recordings of songs with me on long walks. It helps me to be moving when listening to music.

Bien sûr je m’assois à un certain moment du processus créatif, mais pas forcément au début. J’écris les paroles à mon bureau, j’enregistre toutes les démos dans ma chambre, où j’ai une sorte de bureau, mais les meilleures écoutes ne se font pas à ma table de travail, j’ai tendance à aller faire de longues ballades à pied en écoutant mes enregistrements. Ca m’aide, d’être en mouvement, quand j’écoute de la musique.

DS: You compare your writing process to painting, but in your blog you talk a lot of cooking. The way you talk about your writing process makes me think about « experimental » cooking, you know, « a pinch of that, having a taste, maybe more of this, having a taste… »

Tu compares ton processus créatif à celui de la peinture, mais dans ton blog tu parles beaucoup de cuisine. La façon dont tu parles de ton processus créatif me fait penser à de la cuisine « expérimentale », tu sais « une pincée de ceci, on goûte, peut-être un peu plus de ça, on goûte… »

DMS: My experimentation is usually necessitated by my poorly stocked kitchen. What can one do with kale and an avacado and some black eyed peas? well, add a little lime juice and you have something! It is similar to songwriting in a way. I think of my songs as consumables in a way. Others think of songs as fashion accessories or like books. Songs are food for me.

Mon expérimentation [culinaire] est dûe la plupart du temps au fait que j’ai peu de réserves dans ma cuisine. Qu’est-ce qu’on peut bien faire avec du chou, un avocat, et quelques haricots « oeil noir » ? Et bien, ajouter un petit jus de citron vert, et voilà ! C’est similaire à l’écriture de chanson d’une certaine manière. Je conçois mes chansons comme étant consommables d’une certaine manière. Certains conçoivent leurs chansons comme des accessoires de mode ou comme des livres. Les chansons sont pour moi une nourriture.
