Comme une habitude, le bien nommé The Flood était une aubaine pour se permettre d’écrire tout et son contraire à propos de Jonathan Phillips aka Mount Pleasant. Ce LP, à nouveau très dense et mouvementé, permettait cette fois de saisir le Néo-Zélandais titubant entre des exercices d’electronica minimaliste à forte teneur émotionnelle (Permanent Vacation) et des expérimentations plus revêches ou hermétiques (Saint Sebastian, Metal Version For Tobias J. Brockie, Shrines), souvent dangereuses. Offrait la possibilité de le voir badiner au milieu d’échappées krauty (Roman Empire) et tropicales (Zimbabwe Cock Fight II). De se languir sur des dubs en apesanteur (Real Riddims (Demo #6), Secrets Riddim).

On y avait laissé un Jonathan Phillips aux prises avec certaines de ses obsessions musicales. Oscillant entre un hommage poli à Stevie Nicks et Fletwood Mac (Sara) et une reprise de I’m On Fire, noire jusque dans ses tréfonds, de son héro Springsteen. Comme régulièrement sur ses anciennes sorties, la route empruntée par Jonathan Phillips sur The Flood apparaissait sinueuse mais souvent jalonnée d’embardées réjouissantes comme sur Distance ou In the City. Et surtout on avait laissé Mount Pleasant sur une sorte de miracle pop avec In Dreams Final. Comme une chanson hantée mais déformée par un rictus béât.

As usual, The flood was an opportunity to write everything about Jonathan Phillips aka Mount Pleasant. This LP, once again very thick and lively, make it possible to catch the New Zealander reeling along minimalist electronica exercises of high emotional potential (’Permanent Vacation’) and through surly and abstruse experimentations (’Saint Sebastian’, ‘Metal Version For Tobias J. Brockie’, ‘Shrines’), often dangerous. Make it possible to see him jesting around krauty (’Roman Empire’) and tropical (’Zimbabwe Cock Fight II’) spells. Languish with weightlessness dubs (’Real Riddims’ (Demo #6), ‘Secrets Riddim’).

We left Jonathan Phillips wrestling with some musical obsessions. Fluctuating between a polite tribute to Stevie Nicks and Fletwood Mac (’Sara’) and a cover of  ’I'm On Fire’, dark to the core, by Springsteen, his hero. As in his previous releases, the direction taken by Jonathan Phillips on The Flood looks winding and regularly marked with cheerful lurches as through ‘Distance’ or ‘In The City’. Above all, we left Mount Pleasant with some kind of a pop miracle called ‘In Dreams Final’. A song haunted but warped with a stupid smile.

A présent, l’ange complexe Mount Pleasant revient nous fasciner avec cette chute inattendue d’un enregistrement live d’un nouveau Street Heat. On n’avait rarement vu un Jonathan Phillips aussi organique. A la fois percutant et aérien. Tout et son contraire, donc.

Now, Mount Pleasant, the complicated angel, is back and fascinating with this unexpected final of a live recording of ‘Street Heat’. We had rarely saw Jonathan Phillips as much organic. Both hitting right and light. Quite the reverse, then.

Je crois bien avoir traversé les saisons en écoutant Mount Pleasant… Commencé par l’été avec Rio Joy, puis l’automne avec Dissolute – Dissolute… Je reviens donc au printemps avec Nocturnes ! L’hiver a doucement quitté ses quartiers, laissant place à la germination… Des sens, des sons. Il a fallut faire un choix parmi les nombreux titres proposés… Et encore une fois, j’ai eu du mal à l’établir, ce choix. Se laisser bercer par la nuit ou replonger. Ne pas désirer émerger…

I think I’ve passed trough all seasons listening to Mount Pleasant… First it was summer with Rio Joy, then autumn with Dissolute – Dissolute… I’m back in springtime with Nocturnes ! Winter has slowly left its room to germination… Of senses, sounds. I had to make a choice among all the possible tracks… And once again it was difficult to make this choice. Let oneself cradle by the night or dive again. Not wanting to emerge…

His music seems to be disjointed on first listen, but in fact it looks like castles made of sand or houses of cards: fragile and empirical.
